My Journey

From Retail to Santa Claus: My Heartwarming Journey

Introduction:

Retirement is often seen as a time to relax and step back from the hustle and bustle of the working world. However, retirement began a new adventure as I transitioned from an eclectic life. I started my career in the family grocery store, bagging potatoes at the age of 7.  I moved on to stacking gallon cans at the canning factory at 16.  Then, I went to Layton School of Art to learn photography. I then worked for a local newspaper as a photographer and traveled the country working for Presidential candidates.  I finished my career working in retail. This is my story of how I donned the red suit to become a symbol of joy during the holiday season.

Chapter 1: A Lifetime at Sam's Club

My journey into the world of Santa Claus began with my retirement from a long career with  Sam's Club. I dedicated my time and effort to serving customers and helping manage the store for two decades. Little did I know that my retirement would lead me to something more rewarding.

Chapter 2: Volunteering for the American Red Cross

As I retired, I found myself with more time on my hands. I decided to use this newfound freedom to give back to the community. I started volunteering for the American Red Cross, an organization known for its humanitarian efforts and assistance during times of crisis.

Chapter 3: A Special Christmas Call

I received a special request while volunteering for the American Red Cross one Christmas season. They were looking for volunteers to deliver cookies to Fire Department stations, often called "houses." I eagerly accepted the call and decided to spread some holiday cheer uniquely.

Chapter 4: Preparing for the Adventure

I came up with an idea to make my deliveries to the firehouses more exciting. I decided to become Santa Claus for these special visits. I visited a local party store and found a used Santa suit for a mere $25.00. It was a small investment for the joy it would bring.

Chapter 5: Josie, My Faithful Co-Pilot

No Santa Claus can work alone, and I had my trusted companion, Josie, by my side. Josie was a rescue dog from the humane society, and she eagerly joined me on this adventure. Together, we spent two days delivering cookies to firehouses on the south side of Milwaukee, spreading happiness to the brave firefighters who protect our community.

Chapter 6: The Piggly Wiggly Opportunity

Word of my Santa Claus endeavors spread, and soon, I received another unexpected opportunity. I was asked to be the Santa Claus at the opening of a new Piggly Wiggly store. This event marked the official beginning of my Santa Claus journey, and I embraced it wholeheartedly.

Conclusion: The Start of Something Wonderful

Retirement brought me the unexpected gift of becoming Santa Claus. What started as a simple volunteer opportunity became a heartwarming adventure that brought joy to countless people during the holiday season. From my humble beginnings delivering cookies to firehouses to donning the red suit at store openings, I discovered that spreading love and happiness is the greatest gift one can give. My retirement became a time of transformation, and I will forever cherish the memories and smiles I've shared as Santa Claus.
